On April 4, 1974, a tornado caused massive damage to the buildings, landscape, and families in the Crescent Hill, Clifton, and Clifton Heights areas. To respond to the needs of the residents, area churches joined together to help the displaced and affected families "pick up the pieces of their lives" and recover from the disaster. From this effort came United Crescent Hill Ministries (UCHM), with its current membership of 22 churches and organizations.
Through the following years, UCHM continued to meet the needs of the area's residents by developing programs to help "at risk" children, citizens dealing with problems related to aging and isolation, and families needing emergency assistance. Although these programs were beneficial and successful, their scope and participation were limited by a lack of space and accessibility. These limitations were removed when the UCHM Community Center was dedicated on April 4, 2004---thirty years after the devastating tornado struck.
And then ....
The Community Center's space allowed expansion of programs, and today UCHM is the primary provider of social services for the residents of these neighborhoods. This is accomplished through three programs: afterschool and summer programs for youth; lunches and fellowship activities for senior citizens (including Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors); and food and financial assistance for families in emergency situations.
The expansion of space and programs through the UCHM Community Center and the ever-growing need for services has required additional funds. This demand, plus the increasing competition for nonprofit dollars and the concern that expenses for the building itself might decrease UCHM's ability to minister to the community, led the Board of Directors to commit to expand giving opportunities rather than to limit services or the number of program participants---a decision that resulted in the creation of the United Crescent Hill Ministries Endowment Fund.
The United Crescent Hill Ministries Endowment Fund is comprised of financial gifts and other contributions that have been donated specifically to this fund. The money in the fund is invested primarily to generate income for expenses related to operating and maintaining the Community Center building.
Any income beyond these expenses will be incorporated into the annual operating budget. In this way the costs for utilities and maintenance are removed from the operating budget, and more funds are available for programs and services. Thus, there is a guarantee that the work and ministry of UCHM will not only continue and grow, but that this space so important to the community will be secure and well maintained.
In addition, the endowment fund is a means by which people who have benefited from the programs of UCHM and those who support its mission can help ensure that UCHM will be a viable ministry for years to come.
Caring people have helped UCHM meet the needs of individuals and families since 1974. They have served as volunteers (delivering Meals on Wheels, tutoring youth, helping in the office, etc.). They have been supporters of UCHM fundraising activities (the Home Tour, Santa Sprint, and other special events). They have been contributors to UCHM's annual budget through the Annual Appeal.
The United Crescent Hill Ministries Endowment Fund offers a special opportunity to provide additional support and to ensure long-term security for this important ministry. To contribute to this endowment fund, participants may:
